Where I've been, what's been going on ...
Pretty much the same things that have been going on for, well, forever now. Some pieces of good news: 1) I have some personal training sessions owed to me at my old gym. I think about three or four. My current gym finally got back to me about the package I bought in December. This means I'll be able to work with a personal trainer for the next six weeks. Which rules. Lastly, I'm worried about my thyroid medication and whether it's having an effect on my body. I had my dosage switched up in January and ever since then, I've had some serious issues with my weight. I haven't stepped on a scale in a while but things feel a little off. My pants are a smidge tighter, mostly my jeans, and it's just ... yeah. Off. It's incredibly frustrating considering how hard I've been working out, and all of the weight lifting I've been doing, all of the clean eating ... I've not necessarily looking to lose weight - save for the few pounds I seem to have gained - as much as I've been looking to at least maintain where I'm at. I've been frustrated by the gain for some time and I finally figured out what may be to blame. There's no other possible explanation. Like I said, it's not a huge gain, but enough that something is amiss. And I wouldn't lose sleep over it if it weren't for the fact that it stands to reason that not only should I not have gained weight (not muscle mass here, people, as that wouldn't cause my waistband to be tight) but also shouldn't be struggling so much to lose it. Anyway, after this month my prescription runs out and I do more follow up tests with my doctor. This whole thing irritates me to no end because the new prescription HAS helped me with the whole exhaustion issue, which has been nice. I can't remember the last time I got home and sat on the couch only to fall asleep. But this is what happens - you tinker and play and fix until something works better. Part of it rests with me - eating well, getting plenty of sleep, exercise, vitamins - and part of it rests with the medication. I'll figure out a decent combo eventually. Anyone else have this problem with their thyroid medication? I'd really thought that I wasn't going to be hit with this after the lower dosage did so much in terms of dropping the weight with me not doing anything differently than I'd done before - it was after three months on the medication that my weight slipped into the 130s with, again, no huge changes in my lifestyle. I'm opening the comments. Let me know your thoughts thyroid folks! Posted by Erin at 11:26 AM | filed under: Random commentsIt took me at least six months to get on the right medication level. It was frustrating because I would want a change immediately but of course the doctor needs to see how one is working, get bloodwork done, and so on. The level I'm on now has worked for the last year (I was diagnosed in the fall of 2005) and I have a follow up apt. coming up. I could always tell when the medication level was too high - heart flutters, ability to eat more without any weight effects. posted by: Michaela at March 27, 2008 02:25 PM I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's Disease and have been on thyroid medication for about 9 years, since I was around 20. When I began, I was about 50 pounds heavier than I am now. I worked my ass off to lose that weight, and then my doctor lowered my dosage and I haven't been able to lose my last 20 pounds to save my life. I go in for blood work about twice a year, and each time the doctor tells me that my levels are perfect with the dose I am on (which is 175 mcg., not a low dose by any means). It's incredibly frustrating, I understand how you feel! I know that sometimes it can take years to get the medication just right. posted by: kristin at March 27, 2008 08:05 PM My dosage has increased from 75 mcg to 88 mcg to 100 mcg over the course of a few years. So yes, it may need to be increased. But for me, I definitely noticed the "getting tired" wasn't happening as much when I had my meds right. The weight thing, not as much ... it was all diet and exercise. I mean, when I was exhausted I didn't eat well or exercise usually, so there was a correlation. But when I forced myself to eat well and exercise I could lose weight. I just couldn't maintain because I was so flipping tired that I couldn't keep it up. I'm NOT saying that's everyone's experience - just mine. posted by: Happy at March 27, 2008 10:21 PM When I first went on medication - I too lost weight without doing much differently. Not a lot of weight - but enough to make me happy. I still couldn't get off the couch and needed naps to get through my days. posted by: Valerie at March 28, 2008 10:53 AM I am on synthroid as well and have been noticing since they increased my dosage I've been gaining weight. It's the worst. I have a doctor's appointment April 21 so we'll see what she says. Just wanted to let you know you aren't alone. posted by: stephanie at March 28, 2008 02:04 PM I am so glad you are posting about thyroid issues! i was diagnosed two years ago. I don't have hashis, but my TSH hit 63.86 before I figured out what was wrong with my body and I had gained 30+ pounds. I was immediately referred to an endo who put me on 112, dropped the dose 12 weeks later, increased it back 12 weeks after that. I have started gaining again and need to get it checked. I have read on forums about the armour thyroid, but quite frankly those women taking armour kind of scare me! I have a friend who was on a standard dose for many years, and now hers is out of whack and they are adding synthetic T3. I wish there was an easy fix for this. Who would have thought what a difference a little bit of hormone makes in the body. Please post if you find a good solution! posted by: Karen at March 28, 2008 02:24 PM |

I've had to have my dosage increased over time for whatever reason, so don't be surprised if you need to get an increased dosage. Even a tiny incremental increase has an effect, though. I had to get mine upped when I realized that I was tired all the time, even though I was getting plenty of sleep. I think you and I have read (are reading) the same thyroid books, but just in case: one of the books said that people often felt best when their numbers were between 1 and 1.5. My doctor had been pretty happy with my 3.something until I read that and brought it in to show her. I'm now at 1.8 with my current dosage and feeling pretty good. Good luck.
