The latest playlist

My peaks and valleys with training seem to coincide with the music I've got set up on my iPod. I'm never particularly pumped to get into the gym or hit the streets to run - while I really enjoy running, and it's always the exercise I fall back on, I can't remember the last time I felt jacked up by just the thought of running - but I know if I have a new compilation of songs ready to go, I'm less likely to suck as I run.

Such was the case today. I've been hitting shuffle on the iPod as of late, and it's made running sort of lackluster. So today before hitting the gym for my long run, I made myself put together a new routine. And since I'm always looking for new song suggestions by which to workout, I thought I'd share this with you all. It made running somewhat more enjoyable today, and I have to tell you: In the past four years, rare is the instance when Christina Aguilera's "Fighter" plays and do I not get simultaneously choked up and, well, jacked to run harder and faster.

Not all of these are the pinnacle of musical coolness, but it's always been my opinion that the purpose of music when working out only need be that it moves you to move your ass. Screw everyone else's opinion.

Erin, I cant tell you the amount of times that Fighter and 'Lose Yourself' have pumped me up during a workout!

Another one that is great for trying to keep beat with is "Hardest Button to button" by the white stripes.

we have a lot of playlist overlap, it seems (LOVE to run to eminem!). there are a couple songs on your list I need to check out. My other staples are All-Star by Smashmouth and Blister in the Sun by Violent Femmes (for a high school throwback, and it always makes me smile).

I'm also just chiming in with delight at some of our overlap. With a few exceptions (that I will now go download), you've listed most of my own "power ballads." The best thing, for me, is that this is music I would NEVER otherwise listen to. This is Gym Music Only. But, I'm no snob about it. This is the stuff that gets me moving.

Since you're not above Britney at the gym, may I also recommend "Stronger?" I find it to be in the same vein as "Fighter." I also like Aerosmith "Walk this Way" for a warmup and "Life is Short" by Butterfly Boucher.

I love it when people post playlists! Thank you for the suggestions.

Try "Don't stop me now" by Queen.

It's my nike+ "power song" and it's helped pull me through my darkest marathon moments.

well we are both on the same level of "un"coolness then because over half of those songs are on my ipod too!

Hooray for the uncool! La La is the best pump it up song.

Another good song for me is "I Think I'm Paranoid" by Garbage.

Better Things is one of my favorite Dar Williams songs! It's also on my "exercise" playlist.
