Talking bout a resolution
I decided that this year, totally, I needed to make some New Year's resolutions that had nothing to do with my fat ass. I mean, I still made those because what is a new calendar if it doesn't included well-intended trips to the produce aisle thrown in with some dead lifts. This year, in my ongoing efforts to be somewhat a better person, I've made three resolutions and they are as follows: 1) Read more. Shoot for the whole "52 in 52" thing. So far I'm starting off simple and small. No need to jump head first into James Joyce. "Cesar's Way" and Intuitive Eating are just what happened to be the things I want to read most right now so you all can hush up. I'm tackling "Veronica*" after that so relax. (Everytime I look at that book, the Elvia Costello song goes through my head for at least the subequent 20 minutes, sometimes longer.) 2) Eat at the dining room table. I own a dining room table. Sure, it's the dining room table that used to belong to one of my best friends from college and it's possible that it was her parents before that, or maybe it was deserted in the house she and Randi moved into junior year of college. No matter. I have one. It's nice and it also has four chairs. You'll note that I have a dining room as well, and the situation of the table to the living room and TV are as such that one cannot sit at the table and zone out at the boob tube at the same time. I need to stop being such a 20-year-old frat boy at meals. It wouldn't kill me to use my table as something more than a catcher for my mail and purse. 3) Volunteer at least once a month. I know that going something once out of 30 days, give or take a day here and there, isn't anything to write home to mom about but it's a start. I'm signed up for a school library project here in Chicago two weeks from today. Yesterday I managed to sign up for #3, and do both #1 and #2. Today I head back to the gym after a three-week absence and I'm not looking forward to the battle it's sure to be. No matter. I'm not pissy about the resolution/newbie crowd. Why bother? Everyone has to start somewhere. (I am pointing my finger at my friend Tankboy. But only because I love him. He hates the newbies at his gym.) What were your resolutions? Did you make any? Posted by Erin at 03:34 PM | filed under: Odds and ends comments#1 I'm gonna iron out some of my negative personality quirks in 2007. (I know what you're thinking. I thought I was perfect, too. Turns out, my wife tells me, I'm not.) #2 I will drink lots more beer. posted by: lefty at January 3, 2007 09:31 PM But they hog all the good gear, never wipe up their sweat, and spend more time talking and primping (this goes for the men's locker room too, by the way) than they do working out... and that's a lot of time! AUUUUUGH! Aw who am I kidding, you just love to see me get all cranky-pants, and I fell right for it. posted by: tankboy at January 3, 2007 10:04 PM I've stopped making resolutions; for me, resolutions turned out to be ways for me to disappoint myself. Or like, opposite day resolutions. Instead of resolving to lose weight, I might as well just say, "I'm going to stay the same fat pig I've always been for yet another year." So, no more resolutions. That said, I am currently knitting a gorgeous brown, pink, and gold shawl from very expensive yarns that I plan to wear to a friend's wedding in Seattle this fall. I think it would look absolutely GORGE with a nice gold sheath. Which means that this fat roll is going to have to go somewhere else between now and September. And I want to get more organized. But I ALWAYS want to get more organized. The fact that I've been up for nearly three hours and am still sat at the laptop does not bode well for this goal. posted by: boxing octopus at January 4, 2007 08:46 AM I actually had to resolve to volunteer Less this year. It was seriously kicking my ass last year. I've also resolved this really great thing, and it's working out well. Whenever I get irate at someone/thing I ask myself 'does this affect my life at all?' I find that the answer to date has been 'no' and I let it roll right off me. IT's a good resolution (day 4 and going strong). Good luck with your resolutions, happy happy! posted by: Von at January 4, 2007 11:31 AM I made several but the main ones are: 1.) Stop turning on the water at the sink full blast every time. It sprays everywhere and makes a huge mess. It's just not necessary. 2) Drink more water. 3.) Stop paying money for things I can do myself. I'm look at you Caribou Coffee! posted by: Amy at January 4, 2007 12:37 PM I'll be curious to hear what you think of Veronica. Me? Meh. But I love me some Cesar. We could practice dog whispering together. No, that was not supposed to be dirty. Sigh. posted by: Margaret at January 4, 2007 12:49 PM I'm reading Veronica right now too! For volunteering things, www.onebrick.org, has all sorts of one time volunteer events. My resolution is the same one I had last year - better posture. posted by: laura at January 4, 2007 04:27 PM I love the title of this entry! posted by: Colleen at January 6, 2007 09:58 PM |

I'm with you on #1 - in fact, my resolutions for '07 are all about "more." Read more. Do more. Learn more. Get out more. Create more opportunities for myself at work. Spend more time with the people who matter to me. Go to the gym more (which shouldn't be tough since I hardly went in 2006). You get the idea. I'm not exactly known for my stick-to-it-ivness - especially in regards to resolutions, so we'll see how it goes. Maybe I should add "follow through more often" to my list of resolutions.
Nah, don't want to get crazy.
Re: #2 - I have a bad habit of eating food while standing up in the kitchen... often while leaning over the sink. At least you make it to the couch.
