Backwards ... And In Heels
Waking up to learn of this news was not the way I wanted to greet the day, that's for sure. I remember being a little girl and being in total awe of this woman. Total and complete. There were really only two career paths I was ever going to take: journalism or politics. In addition to my father's political involvements, Ann Richards was the other reason I ever even considered giving my life up to that world. I'm still happy with the choice I made, but damned if I don't feel like I let her down a bit. "I did not want my tombstone to read, 'She kept a really clean house.'" Richards said this before she left office more than a decade ago. I was reminded of it today when I read her obit. Women such as Richards gave the rest of us permission to start thinking that, you know, maybe, just maybe, it was OK to embrace a life that didn't include being a homemaker, as noble as a career as it may be. It's simply not for everyone; certainly not for me. Godspeed, Ms. Richards. You'll be missed. What you saw was what you got. posted by: Sarah at September 14, 2006 04:25 PM Why am I not surprised that you were a huge fan too? posted by: Colleen at September 15, 2006 08:45 AM Co, Co, Co!!!! I owe you, like, a trillion emails. I know. It's no way to treat someone you've known since you were five. Sigh. Kristin would feel the same way as I owe HER emails, too. Seriously - you people who haven't known me since I was a child should be glad because those who have think I'm a bigger putz than you. Colleen - how are those kids? The hubby? (I won't type out their names here!) Send my love to your folks - and I so knew you'd be all about Ann Richards, too. Such good little dems. :) posted by: Erin at September 15, 2006 11:53 AM OMG-- I have been gone 10 days, no news, no tv, nothing. Catching up on my journals and read this. I am just devastated. What a "great broad". posted by: Connie at September 19, 2006 03:03 PM |

She was the epitome, to me, of a "great broad." She will be missed.
