An Easy Labor (Day)

My friend, Eliza, is one for doing these really neat entries at her site wherein she recaps her weekends. They're charming - I'd almost call them whimsical, which is a tough feat since a run-down of one's Friday through Sunday activities are usually pretty mundane.

"I got home, I ordered takeout, and then I rented a movie."

"I ran a mile around my neighborhood and then took a long nap during a Laguna Beach marathon."

"I sat on my ass."

But I think there is something to be said for taking stock of a very good weekend, especially when they happen rather accidentally. When things such as sitting on a coffee shop, reading and eating a raspberry cookie can seem like heaven on earth. That's how my Labor Day weekend felt like. Maybe not heaven on earth, but at the least a string of really small events that when tied together create a lovely memory. And the older I get, which admittedly isn't old, the more I realize that it's the string of really small events that hold things together and make life enjoyable.

So in the spirit of Eliza, these are the small events of the past four days. They made waking up today and resuming my regularly scheduled programming much easier to tolerate.

* No matter how much I like Fat Tire beer, and no matter how much $4 for a pint of it is a good deal, I still have a hard time paying that much for beer. In my world, beer should never be more than $2.50.

* But I will totally pay $10 for a dirty Sapphire martini at this bar. I don't traditionally haunt bars south of Division Street, mostly because they're too expensive and filled with people who congregate in the bathroom and somehow can manage to casually talk about chemotherapy and the latest guy they're having pay for their dinner in the same breath, but I was in the neighborhood on Saturday and we stumbled upon it in our search cocktails and good people watching. The sidewalk seating was surrounded by lush flower boxes, tall torches, and white lights were draped from every corner so we couldn't say no.

* I have the best hairdresser in the world. I like my hair again.

* Felicity wants on. She just does.

* Thursday night I saw Dick Prall and Tight Phantomz at one of Thax's farewell shows. For reasons I can't quite understand, so much ado about nothing as been made of Thax, a curious man with a penchant for poetry who harms no one but irritates the crap out of the music scenesters all over town. Later that night at Liar's Club, it was remarked that we can't actually start to miss Thax until he's gone and with the number of "farewell" shows that keep popping up all over the city, it's possible that it might never happen.

* I liked Tight Phantomz, though.

* I had sushi on Saturday night at Oysy. Good: the company, the spicy tuna roll and the conversation between the kids sitting at the table to our immediate right. Bad: When I asked for a Black Cherry Effen and 7Up, somehow the waitress got confused and brought me the vodka on its own, on the rocks. Curious: the tuna tartare was served on rice noodles in a martini glass with five different varieties of caviar adorning the top with four pieces of romaine sticking out from the tuna. And there were strings of pickled beet. We didn't know how to eat it. But we tried.

* My favorite priest said Mass on Sunday and he managed to take Sunday's gospel and not turn it into an opportunity to scold and condem but rather to uplift and remind me that there are so many of my faith who still believe strongly in the idea of social justice.

* I need to have more patience when it comes to children misbehaving during Mass. They're just kids, after all.

* Ana Belaval totally bargain shops for the most fierce of shoes and I told her that on Sunday night when my sister introduced me to her. When she told me said fierce shoes cost her $15 in a shop in NYC, I about died. Some other people did, too.

* I love the "L" so much that it's painful. Everything that is awesome about this city ride on those trains.

* I made breakfast casserole, grilled steak with roasted red pepper sauce, red velvet cake, and chicken and rice this weekend. All were a success except the casserole. You can't win them all.

* Glin decided to spend Return To Dog Beach driving everyone crazy. She refused to fetch her own ball, instead prefering to swipe those belonging to other dogs. Flat out refused. Then she insited on terrorizing this poor woman who, quite frankly, has no real idea about the nature of dogs. Glin wasn't being mean or attacking her, she just wanted to play. After an hour, we called it a day.

* I can think of no better way to spend a day off of work than reading, listening to music and watching hours of Law & Order until you have to forcibly remove yourself from the couch.

* I wore this shirt all weekend. I bought it at a new store in my hood. I wish I could wear it right now.

* I realized just how much I love ninjas, even more than I did before. Don't make fun of them, though. They get testy.

But what's the deal with Fat Tire? My brother loves it, too, but I think it's kinda blah.
