Let's Leave Chicago to the Eskimos, That Town's a Little Too Rugged

In two days we leave for Los Angeles for the holi ... er, for CHRISTMAS. It's going to be in the 70s and, this ain't no lie, I could care less about having a White Christmas. It's not even January and I am all sorts of done with the snow.

I have never been to LA. I've never had much of a yearning to visit, which is odd for someone like me. I think I like to salivate over celebrity from a safe distance. It just seems more respectable that way.

Anyway, so I'm going to LA and while there are many, many family obligations to be had - that's why we're going out there, of course - there should be some time for me to do some sight seeing. So I turn to you, my friends.

Where should I go? Really. Where do I need to go? Any thoughts?

There are so many places you can go: Hollywood Blvd. for the people-watching; the beach, just because you can in December (I recommend Zuma in Malibu); Santa Monica; and here, one of the coolest dessert places around right now: http://www.sprinklescupcakes.com/

Don't miss the Getty Center ( http://www.getty.edu/ )
The space is spectacular, as are the views.
And, in the interest of enlightening all humans, it is open, accessible and free to the public.

I too recommend Malibu...I like Paradise Cove (eat at the restaurant, and you can avoid the $25 parking charge!). There's also a restaurant right on the PCH Moon..something (can't remember...) very romantic out on the deck. Or you could go to Dukes. Also on the PCH.

Santa Monica Farmer's Market is always nice. Saturdays or Wednesdays. My Husband would recommend THE best ribs place ever. It's called JRs. "Tender as a Mother's Love" with absolutely no ambiance. We're talking styrofoam plates and plastic cutlery, but the nicest people ever, and the best BBQ in the entire WORLD. It's in Culver City.

Don't bother stopping at Pinks. Not so great.

Walking up Montana Street in Santa Monica is a good place to star watch. And stop in at L'Atelier yarn store and say hi for me.

I'm getting all nostalgic just writing this. I want to go to Calfornia too!

Oh yes! The Getty! Go for sure!

The Brite Spot in Echo Park! It's just a diner, but it's got more personality than Jim Carrey.

ALSO: THE HOUSE OF PIES.

For a beautiful view of the ocean (and the rich people), drive over to Palos Verdes and go see the Point Vicente lighthouse.

If you do end up in Santa Monica, go to the Third Street Prominade. Outdoor mall with lots of people-watching and cool shops.

If you were a 90210 fan, drive to Hermosa Beach and you can find the beachhouse pretty easily.

The Getty is great. Drive south along the Pacific Coast Highway and just stop in beaches and towns that seem cool--Huntington Beach is great. I personally don't care for LA all that much (a bit too fake for me), but it is a nice getaway, especially when it is so cold here.

Of course, you GOTTA see San Pedro (but I might be a little biased!). Actually, San Pedro doesn't have as much to see for a whirlwind visit of LA. Still, it does have immense charm.

Pedro does have some excellent ethnic restaurants--Italian, Greek and Croatian, plus a fresh fish market. If you love fish, though, you must go to the Reel Inn, 18661 Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu. Great food and good prices.

People are right about the Getty. It is a must-see. The new Getty Villa just opened up in Malibu, too. It is spectacular, as well.

The Palos Verdes Peninsula does have some great lighthouses (one in PV and one in Pedro) and great views. If you're in town long enough, consider a day trip to Catalina Island.

And, of course, the best Christmas Eve service in the entire world is at the San Pedro United Methodist Church. (Ah, we're Protestant, but what can you do?)

If you have more specific interests in mind, I might be able to give better advice.

If you're in the area, stop in and see us.

If you like the movie Swingers you should go to the Derby and the Dresden while you are there too!

go see all of the above and for a touch of quirky, go to Venice beach! I lived in CA for over 20 years, I miss it terribly!

"There's also a restaurant right on the PCH Moon..something (can't remember...) "

Moonshadows!

You're gone now, but if you're checking this from your vacay, you should definitely go to the Getty. It's amazing. And Malibu! And go to Mann's Chinese, to see the hands and feet in cement, and....damn, I grew up here, so I can never think of anywhere to go. Oh! If you want to see celebrities, go to The Grove, which is a big outdoor mall [like every other mall in the world, except with a huge Bellagio-esque fountain], next to LA's historic old Farmer's Market, which is very cool. Full of celebs. Definitely go to the Dresden and see Marty and Elaine. Don't bother with the crazy bars on Sunset, although Bar Marmont is cool and low key. If you need some laid back Irish pub-type action, I like O'Briens on Wilshire in Santa Moncia.
