I Work Up To My Potential
I am not supposed to like the new Liz Phair. It's sort of the duty of those us who can still barely believe what's happened to her since she, presumably, snorted the entire bag of Satan's magicial dust off of The Matrix's ass that eventually turned her into Sheryl Crow. But God help me, some of her new stuff is delightfully sweet and filled with pop goodness and I know if a lesser-caliber artist pumped this out I'd be happy as a clam. Do you all know how obsessed I am with Kelly Clarkson? It's true. So yeah. The new album came out today and ... and it doesn't suck nearly as hard as the last one did. Not at all. Count On My Love
Some day if we never said it You can count on my love Blue eyes, bluer than the blue sky Some day if we never said it You can count on my love You go through your whole life waiting You can count on my love Posted by Erin at 10:59 PM | filed under: Supastah commentsdarn, she came out with the new one already? and i don't even have a copy of the last one yet! i adore liz phair. it's just too bad, from where i live, not too many people know about her music. they're too busy being kelly clarkson, or britney or hilary duff or lindsay lohan. but don't get me wrong, i like kelly. i sang akelly song in one of our school programs (not a moment like this). i just wished more people would listen to liz phair. or sell liz phair albums here. it's so hard to find one. darn. posted by: bels at October 5, 2005 12:32 PM Man. I still listen to Exile in Guyville and White Chocolate Space Egg, and think of what could have been. I am sitting here, with fingers crossed, hoping you're right about the new album. I"m still going to see her in November, regardless. What can I say? I love clinging to the past. posted by: Heather at October 6, 2005 12:34 AM Sorry, the new LP LP (Liz Phair LP, get it?) just stinks to high heaven. Kudos on the KC big ups though. I take full credit for breaking her to the rock and/or roll masses. posted by: tankboy at October 6, 2005 10:47 AM Ahhh, Jim. See, I knew it had to be your fault that we still want to believe that one day! One song! Will sound remotely like something on Exile. And I said SOME Jim. SOME. :) posted by: Erin at October 6, 2005 10:57 AM long-time lurker, first-time poster. erin, i feel that we are on the same page when it comes to liz phair, so your enjoyment of the new album gave me hope for her show in atlanta last night. but alas, it was awful. there were maaaybe 200 people there--my friend and i immediately picked up on the large number of dorky 40something men, which was obviously strange. it seemed like liz's band had just been handed to her by the record company--she made a lot of comments about them "not knowing this song yet," and the arrangements and sound were terrible. they were always unsure about key, so they totally botched "cinco de mayo" by playing it really high. even "divorce song" did not help my mood--it was honestly one of the worst concert experiences of my life. i dearly wish that i had had a forget-me-now. i think it will be a long while before i can even listen to her again. posted by: alison at October 11, 2005 09:34 AM |

I completely agree. I love, love, love Exile in Guyville in a way you can only love an album you first heard when you were a freshman in college. But people evolve. I have evolved, so has our dear Liz. The last album wasn't bad, it was just a little too pop for the Liz we knew and loved. And the new album? I like it. Sure, it was just one listen, but it is a quality effort that seems to touch a little more on her older stuff. Maybe she had to take a big leap into Popville before finding her ground?
And Kelly Clarkson is my BFF. I have been trying to figure out for weeks how to dress like her for Halloween. No luck.
